Single parenthood has become increasingly more common since the 1970’s. It is estimated that this growth can be explained by the dramatic jump in divorce rates, as well as the increasing number of couples who become pregnant without being married and then either split up or decide that only one of the parents will care for the child.
Of course, there are many other reasons that cause children to have only one parent, but these explain the large augmentation that has occurred since the seventies. There is nothing wrong with being a single parent.
Single parents around the world cope with their situations every day and raise happy, healthy children. However, this is not to say that single handedly bringing up a child is an easy process. It is challenging – a struggle at times – on many levels.
This being said, there is nothing that two parents can do that a single parent cannot in terms of providing a supportive, nurturing atmosphere in which to grow up, while instilling the right morals and values. As a single parent, you will need to deal with significant stresses in your life.
For this reason, it is important for you to build a support group for yourself, consisting of people and resources that will help you when you are having a tough time. This support group should include friends and family members who can provide emotional support as well as their time when you just need a few minutes more in a day to get things done.
You’ll also want a doctor, pharmacist, or counselor who can help you to make the right healthy choices for your child when you’re not sure of the correct path.
Finally, you’ll also want to make sure that you have a parenting expert on your side when you have questions. This expert doesn’t actually need to be a person, but could come in the form of a website or a guidebook that you can read or use as a reference book when you feel uncertain as to how to proceed.
Single Parenting Secrets, for example, provides advice, resources, suggestions, tips, and tricks that are geared especially toward the single parent and his or her children.
